Manali (Solang Valley)

Solang Valley is not a conventional ski resort, and the honest framing matters more here than the stats: if you want a structured season with staff accommodation and formal hiring, Gulmarg or Auli are the Indian resorts to look at instead. The terrain will not keep you entertained for four months. You are looking at a 500-metre vertical valley with two lifts serving beginner-friendly, largely unmarked slopes, closer to a learning hill than a destination mountain. The 889 centimetres of average annual snowfall reads well until you account for how it falls: heavily concentrated in December and January, with February often bringing deteriorating conditions and road closures that shut access entirely. The recorded season is around 105 days, but many of those will not be consecutive, so an intermediate or advanced rider will be bored within a month.

Living costs are genuinely cheap, at roughly 5,000 rupees a month for rent and 320 rupees a week for groceries, but you will not be living in Solang Valley itself, which has no real town infrastructure. You will be based in Manali proper, 13 to 14 kilometres away, where the shops, cafes and markets are. The nearest international airport (IXC) is 315 kilometres away, which makes arrival and departure logistically awkward. Transport between Manali and Solang is possible but unreliable in heavy snow, leaving you dependent on local buses or private arrangements.

The critical issue is employment. There is no established seasonaire job market here comparable to Europe or North America, and formal positions in ski school, lift operations or resort hospitality do not exist in the way you would expect. Work is informal and scattered across gear rental counters, guesthouse roles and activity coordination, arranged directly with local vendors in Manali town rather than through any official hiring process. Staff accommodation programmes do not exist, so you rent a room locally like any other resident. The seasonal workforce is almost entirely Indian, mostly local Himachali workers, so the expat networks that make a season manageable elsewhere are not here. This works only if you are comfortable with informal day-rate work, do not mind the isolation, and see it as a winter in the Himalaya rather than a structured ski season.
