Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval

You'll get solid vertical here: 1,752 metres of it. But you need to be realistic about terrain variety over a four-month season. Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval sits in the Portes du Soleil circuit, which means you're not confined to one mountain. The resort itself is modest, and whether you'll stay engaged depends entirely on how much you value access to the wider Portes du Soleil network versus skiing the same local runs repeatedly. The 134-day season is respectable for the French Alps, and average snowfall is decent at this elevation, but this isn't a sprawling resort with endless tree runs or varied terrain parks. It's a working mountain in a small commune. If you're the type who needs new terrain every few days to stay motivated, you might find yourself restless by month three.

Living costs are genuinely low by Alpine standards: groceries average €60 per week, and rent in a small French mountain village is far cheaper than Chamonix or Val d'Isère. The trade-off is that Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval is a small commune, not a resort town. You'll have a real village feel, which suits some people and bores others. Everyday amenities exist, but don't expect late-night shops or a buzzing high street; you're living in a functioning French mountain community, not a seasonaire bubble. The nearest major airport is Geneva, roughly 90 minutes away, and you'll need your own transport or reliable local connections to get there. Public links exist but aren't frequent. If you value proximity to a proper town with restaurants, bars, and social infrastructure, you'll want to check what's accessible by bus or car from the village itself.

Without detailed local data, it's hard to say exactly what the seasonaire scene looks like here or which nationalities dominate the worker population. Seasonal work in French ski communes typically includes hospitality, ski school, and mountain operations roles, but Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval's specific job market and staff-housing situation aren't clear from available information. Before committing, contact local employers directly: the ski school, any hotels or mountain restaurants, and the commune office. Ask about staff accommodation, typical contract lengths, and whether they actively hire international seasonaires. If you're a beginner looking to learn to ski while working, a small resort can actually be an advantage. If you're experienced and need challenging terrain, you'll rely heavily on the Portes du Soleil access to stay satisfied.
