Nanshan Ski Village

Nanshan is small, 2.71 km² of skiable terrain with a 125 m vertical drop. You need to be realistic about what that means over four months. You won't get bored if you're learning to ski or snowboard, or if you're content drilling technique on the same runs repeatedly. However, if you're an intermediate-to-advanced rider looking for varied terrain to explore, you'll likely feel the limits by month two. The resort does have some character beyond beginner slopes: moguls, jumps, and snowboard features exist alongside the drag-lift beginner terrain, so there's a reason it attracts international instructors. Snowfall and season length aren't well documented in available sources. As a Beijing-area resort at relatively low elevation (215 m top), expect a shorter, less reliable season than Alpine resorts; this season likely runs November through February at best, and is heavily dependent on snowmaking.

Nanshan sits in Shengshuitou Village near Miyun County, on the outskirts of Beijing. This means you're not isolated, but you're also not in a ski town with many amenities. The area has "very little else" beyond the resort itself, so don't expect walkable shops, restaurants, or nightlife on your doorstep. Most everyday amenities and social life will require trips back toward Beijing proper. Staff accommodation is typically dorm-style, often shared with up to 8 people, and usually subsidized or free. This is a significant cost saving, though privacy will be minimal. Beijing Capital Airport is roughly 100 km away, making it accessible but not a quick commute. Getting to and from the resort for your season will require planning.

The international community at Nanshan is real but modest. The resort employs around 40 foreign ski instructors, which means you'll have a seasonaire cohort but not a massive one. Instructor work is the primary job available for English-speaking foreigners. Hospitality and lift operations roles exist but are less commonly filled by internationals. The staff tend to be a mix of nationalities, including instructors trained in Austria, though the exact breakdown isn't clear. Nanshan is genuinely beginner-friendly. If you're new to skiing or snowboarding, the terrain and teaching culture suit you well. If you're already intermediate or advanced, you'll be working with learners most of the time. This is fine if that appeals to you, but the mountain itself won't challenge your own riding much. The atmosphere is likely quieter and more work-focused than a big international resort. Don't expect a booming après-ski scene or a large expat party community.
