Mount Washington Alpine Resort

Mount Washington is a modest vertical playground with 507m of drop across five lifts, which means you'll lap the same runs frequently over a four-month season. With 900cm of annual snowfall, you're looking at consistent coverage and a long season, but the terrain won't surprise you after your first month. If you're the type who needs constant novelty and huge vertical to stay engaged, you might feel the limitation. If you're happy to dial in technique, build community, and ski the same mountain deeply, the consistent snow and reliable season length work in your favour. The mountain supports beginner-to-intermediate progression well, with instruction programs and school groups running regularly, so there's a functional learning curve if you're new to the sport.

Living costs on Vancouver Island are moderate compared to mainland ski towns, though exact rent figures aren't published. You'll need to contact the resort's staff rental program directly, and availability isn't guaranteed. The real advantage is that you're not isolated: Mount Washington sits near the Comox Valley, a proper town with everyday shops, groceries, and services, connected by a daily staff shuttle from the base. Courtenay is your nearest real town for non-ski life, which beats being stranded in a one-horse resort village. Nearest airport is likely Comox Valley, though you may route through Vancouver; transport logistics are worth confirming before committing, but the shuttle system suggests the resort takes staff access seriously.

Jobs span the full resort spectrum: instruction, lift ops, guest services, retail, housekeeping, kitchen, bar, and shuttle driving. There's usually something available if you're flexible. Staff accommodation exists through a rental program, though you'll need to sort details with your manager. The free season pass and subsidized family passes (after three shifts per two weeks) are solid perks that offset modest wages. The seasonal community is compact rather than huge, which means less party-culture chaos but also fewer ready-made friendships. You'll build genuine connections rather than join a pre-made ski-bum scene. The vibe skews practical and multi-national (though specific nationalities aren't documented), and the resort clearly welcomes beginners learning to ski alongside experienced workers, so you won't feel out of place if you're new to the sport.
