Matterhorn Ski Paradise

The skiing

Matterhorn Ski Paradise spans 360 kilometres of connected terrain across the Swiss-Italian border, anchored by two very different mountains. Zermatt sits on a 2,279-metre vertical with year-round glacier skiing, while Cervinia offers serious altitude and snow reliability from its 1,524-metre base. The network suits intermediate to advanced skiers most naturally; this isn't a beginner playground, though Cervinia leans more forgiving than Zermatt's steeper, more technical terrain. The signature draw here is the glacier skiing and the sheer vertical available; you're looking at genuine variety and long seasons because of the altitude and snowfall consistency.

The towns

Cervinia, Italy sits at serious altitude and feels like the more relaxed, budget-conscious option. Rent runs around EUR 1,500 per month and wages hover near EUR 1,250, so you'll need to be realistic about margins. The trade-off is that beer costs EUR 6 and the vibe is quieter (nightlife 4.5/10), making it ideal if you want to recover properly between shifts. , Switzerland is the opposite: it's expensive (CHF 1,800 rent, CHF 10 beer) but pays better (CHF 2,400 salary) and has a livelier social scene (nightlife 6.5/10). also draws serious backcountry skiers and attracts a more cosmopolitan seasonaire crowd, though the terrain is genuinely gnarly (8.1/10) and not forgiving for learners.

Which town should you pick

If you're chasing nightlife and don't mind paying Swiss prices, base yourself in ; it's the only town in this area with a real après-ski culture, and the salary bump helps offset the cost. If you're on a tight budget or want to maximize your take-home pay, is cheaper to live in and has lower beer prices, though you'll be earning less and the social scene is quieter. If you're an advanced skier or backcountry-focused, 's backcountry access (8/10) and gnarlier terrain (8.1/10) make it the natural choice. If you prefer beginner-friendly slopes and don't want to feel out of your depth every day, 's more approachable terrain (7.5/10 beginner-friendliness vs 's 4.5/10) is the better fit.

Getting around

Zurich Airport is the nearest major hub, roughly 3.5 hours from by train and bus. For everyday amenities beyond the villages themselves, Visp (Switzerland) and Aosta (Italy) are the closest proper towns, each within an hour or so depending on which side of the border you're based. The lift pass connects both towns, so you can split time between them if you want to test the vibe before committing to a season base.
