Aletsch Arena

The skiing

Aletsch Arena is a compact, interconnected network of 104km across three lift-linked villages, sitting between 1900m and 2869m. The terrain is genuinely skiable year-round thanks to high altitude and solid snow reliability, but it's not a sprawl; you're looking at a concentrated intermediate and beginner playground rather than endless vertical or terrain variety. The runs are well-groomed reds and blues, with enough consistency to keep you entertained through a season without feeling repetitive, though if you're chasing big vertical or serious freeride zones, you'll find this area modest compared to the mega-resorts. The Aletsch Glacier itself is a landmark feature of the region, and the views across the Valais are genuinely striking, which counts for something on the long days.

The towns

Bettmeralp sits at the heart of the arena at 1970m and feels like the hub; it's the most central base if you want easy access to all three villages' terrain without commuting. The village has a quiet, mountain-focused vibe with solid seasonaire infrastructure, though it's small enough that you won't find loud nightlife or a buzzing après scene.

is the lowest and most accessible of the three, sitting at the base of the arena. It's the closest to everyday amenities and feels less isolated than the higher villages, making it a practical choice if you need regular access to shops, services, or a sense of being connected to the valley. The trade-off is that you're starting lower, so snow reliability is slightly less certain than or .

sits at 1905m and offers a similar vibe to ; it's a small, quiet mountain village with a tight seasonaire community. It's marginally lower than but still high enough for solid snow, and it feels fractionally more integrated into the broader Valais culture than the other two.

Which town should you pick

If you want the most central location with the longest season and best snow reliability, base yourself in ; it's the highest and sits at the geographic heart of the arena. If you're on a tight budget or value proximity to a real town with shops and services, is your best bet, though you'll sacrifice some snow consistency. If you want a quieter, more intimate seasonaire experience without feeling isolated, is a good option; it has a strong local community feel. None of these villages will give you a party scene or high-energy nightlife, so choose based on altitude preference, budget, and how much you value being close to a proper town versus being fully embedded in the mountains.

Getting around

The nearest major airport is Geneva, roughly 150km away and a 2.5-hour drive or train journey. Brig, the closest proper town with supermarkets, restaurants, and services, is about 30km down the valley and easily reachable by bus or car for resupply runs. The villages themselves are small and car-free or car-light, so plan on using the local bus network or your legs for day-to-day movement.
