Abondance

Abondance won't keep you entertained on terrain alone for a full four-month season. The 1,347m vertical and 600km² skiable area sit at the smaller end of the Alps, and with only 8 lifts you're looking at a resort you can lap thoroughly in a few weeks. That said, the 800cm average annual snowfall is solid, and the 108-day season is respectable for the region—you won't be dealing with thin cover or early closures. The real draw is access to the wider Portes du Soleil network via shuttle, which effectively gives you far more terrain to explore when you need a change of scenery. If you're the type who gets bored skiing the same runs repeatedly, you'll need to factor in regular trips to bigger resorts or accept that you'll spend a lot of non-skiing time here.

At €750 (~£643) monthly rent and €55 (~£47.2) weekly groceries, Abondance is genuinely affordable—cheaper than most Alpine seasonaire bases—but that's partly because it's a genuine village, not a resort town built for tourists. You'll have access to everyday shops and services without needing to drive to the next town, which matters when you're living somewhere for months. Geneva airport is 80km away, so transport to and from the UK or further afield is straightforward. The trade-off is that Abondance itself is quiet: there's no nightlife scene to speak of, and if you're craving a proper night out or a wider range of restaurants and bars, you'll be relying on occasional trips to larger nearby resorts or towns.

Jobs here center on hospitality—bars, restaurants, accommodation—with some ski-school and mountain-operations roles available, though the latter often require French and are typically filled locally. Staff accommodation is sometimes offered with seasonal positions, but availability isn't guaranteed and can be competitive; budget for the possibility of paying rent if you can't secure it. The seasonaire community is small and mixed, with a blend of French staff and international workers, particularly English speakers in hospitality roles. Abondance suits people learning to ski or improving intermediate technique—the resort explicitly caters to all levels—but it's not a destination for advanced riders seeking steep terrain. If you're after a quieter, less party-focused season in a real Alpine village with manageable living costs and beginner-friendly slopes, this works; if you need high-end terrain, a buzzing staff scene, or constant novelty, look elsewhere.
